Selecting the Right Diamond
THE 4 C’S
Diamond quality is graded on four factors: Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat weight. These four elements together comprise how a diamond is priced on a spectrum. The industry makes arbitrary pricing charts based on these grades, and it’s my job to show my customers how to game this system.
Familiarizing yourself with the basic knowledge of diamond buying by visiting Gemological Institute of America’s guide on how to choose a diamond: GIA Diamond Buying Guide.
Most people prefer good old-fashioned mined diamonds, but some are choosing other stones for their engagement rings these days. Lab-grown diamonds are readily available and worth a conversation with your jeweler.
For colored gemstones, not every stone has the durability needed for everyday wear like an engagement ring. You want to select a stone that can withstand the test of time.
Some of the best diamond alternatives are sapphires, with a Mohs hardness of 9 (diamonds have a Mohs hardness of 10). Both sapphire and diamond are available in a rainbow of colors that allow your forever ring to actually last forever.
